Sheela Davi in India

Sheela Devi is 20 years old and has two young sons. She works as a housemaid and her husband is a rickshaw driver. They moved from a rural village to the Madrasi slum colony of Dehradun to find work and have lived in their one room home for over 5 years. In early 2009 Sheela developed a persistent cough and soon became too ill and weak to work. She had no idea that her symptoms suggested TB but was ‘very frightened and worried’ that her children would also get it.

She was found by an AKS Hope community volunteer – part of a fully trained network of volunteers that go out into communities to find people with TB symptoms. Sheela is now cured and happy to be working again. She told us, ‘I praise God that I am still here to look after my children’.
